We are creating this art instillation for BurningMan 2005. It is essentially a 15 foot woven 3/8 dome shape. It will be constructed with woven willow and will be permaeble to light. (Imagine a loosely woven twig basket turned over!) I want to light the interior space and the exterior surface independently. I want to program through slow color transitions independently at the same rate; ie. the inside is red, the outside is blue...slowly changing through the spectrum.
My original idea was to find a CHEAP 3-4 channel programmer and cluster MR16 24-32 ( www.superbrightleds.com) LED lamps in threes( Red, Blue, Green) Total interior
RGB trios four on a channel, total exterior RGB trios eight on two channels. I am realizing that LEDS my be too expensive and unnecesary.
It is starting to look like I may be able to create the same effect with less cost using some kind of stage lighting. My budget is around $1000.00 and I have about 1500 watts of gennie power for the lighting. HELP!!!
By the way, my technical skills are shit and will be looking for ease in assembly and programming.
Thanks for your help!!

meet dr.light... knthnx
i can help you but need to know some more specifics. Please PM me.
1. do you have dimmming and control
2. if you dont want to use LEDs, then what? Pars probably?
3. how even does the wash need to be
4. do you want the xfade transitions to happen automatically, meaning no operator go would be required.
5. is the covering opaque? translucent?

Re: Need Expertise to Light Burning Man Instillation!
Mon, February 20, 2006 - 6:58 PMI forsee a lot of LED lighting completly changing the night landscape of the playa in the next two to three years.
Pricing for RGB DMX LED fixtures has dropped from $1+k to less then $200 ($159 for 64-led par) today. This brings the pricepoint down to a very usable level, and when at the benifit of fuel savings for running generators (over NINETY 64-LED pars can be used on a single 1800w gennie compared to SIX standard 300-watt Pars) and massive color options, this makes them perfect for the playa.
Fun Stuff! -

Thu, February 23, 2006 - 9:35 AMA budget, a budget, my kingdom for a budget!
Okay, a bigger one than I've got, anyway. I'd love to have enough LED fixtures to saturate the Center Camp Cafe with serious color, instead of having to use mostly high-transmission ambers and pinks.

Re: Need Expertise to Light Burning Man Instillation!
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 7:04 AMTalked with them this morning. They have some interesting LED DMX products. We're going to order 2 of their CoolCan64's to try out which they said were equivalent in light output to one of our standard 500 watt PAR 64 cans. The trade off for higher per can cost is much lower current draw per can plus what seems to be the equivalent of an integral DMX controlled color changer.

Wed, April 4, 2007 - 6:34 PMchauvet also has some awesome LED color washes that are a variation of their techno strobe series. I purchased a couple of their UV LED panels and they're pretty bright for being in such a nice slim package!
